Geek Speak Goes Mainstream

Whatever you do, don’t accuse The Oxford English Dictionary’s chief editor, John Simpson, of “geekery.” (Geekery: “The behaviour typical of geeks, specifically obsessive devotion to or knowledge of a particular subject or pursuit, especially one regarded as unfashionable or highly technical.”) After all, Simpson was the first to admit to the dictionary’s rule-breaking tendencies this June, when “tweet” was included in the OED’s latest quarterly update. Despite not being in use for the minimum 10 years required for inclusion, Simpson reasoned that the verb “seems to be catching on.”
